Use Design to Try to Change the World – Maurice Woods prepares to kick off the second season of Inneract Project in San Francisco.
San Francisco, CA February 2009 – Inneract Project, the program that provides free classes for students interested in learning about graphic design, prepares to kick off its second season in San Francisco.
Maurice Woods, founder of Inneract Project, started the program in Seattle in 2004 to, “present underserved youth with creative career paths they can pursue.” Woods’ passion for design and his childhood spent in the inner city of Richmond, CA, helped stem the idea for Inneract Project.
Inneract Project was put into action in a graduate class at the University of Washington, Seattle, when Woods’ had an assignment to: Use Design to Try to Change the World. Woods’, who had always been interested in using his design skills to enhance self-pride and cultural awareness, envisioned a program that would bring design to the community. He figured, “there must be kids who love to draw and create things,” just as he did as a child, “but who may not know about professions in graphic design.”
When Wood’s brought Inneract Project to the Bay Area in the fall of 2008, the free classes had grown to as many as 30 students.
Woods’ utilizes community relationships and sponsors to publicize and fund the non-profit Inneract Project. Through word of mouth and a network of volunteers, Woods’ mission continues to develop in the Bay Area. Beginning on March 21, 2009, Inneract Project will hold two six-week sessions, one in San Francisco and one in the East Bay.
